Class 1 2017 - 2018

Welcome to Class 1

Teacher: Miss McVeigh

Teaching Assistant: Mrs Steele

Our Learning

This half term we are investigating who Neil Armstong is and why he is famous. With the help of our space station role play area, we will be thinking about what it would be like to travel to Space.

In English, as part of The Primary Writing Project, we are currently learning and enjoying the story of 'The Lion Inside'. This story follows the journey of a timid and meek mouse who goes on a journey and discovers his 'inner lion', becoming brave and confident by the end of the story. We will be using this story to plan and write our own animal change stories.

In Maths we will be working on addition and subtraction within 20 and place value within 50. With the help of some catchy tunes and song and dance, we will be learning multiples of 2, 5 and 10.

Our new The Way, the Truth and the Life topic is 'Families and Celebrations'. We have created beautiful paper chains of our families and have been thinking about what it is like to be part of a family and a community. We will be thinking about what celebrations we have with our families and what celebrations take place in Church.

The children have PE every Tuesday afternoon. Please ensure that your child has their kit in school and that it is clearly labelled. We will also take part in the Daily Mile every afternoon.

Homework will be sent home every Thursday and will alternate between Maths and English. This should be brought back into school the following Monday.

Reading books will be changed every Monday and Thursday, however, please ensure that your child has their book in school every day. Please listen to your child read every day and encourage them to retell the story and explain their understanding of what is read.

Every Monday, spelling books will be sent home with words that your child will be learning that week in phonics. Please encourage your child to practice these words and apply them in their writing.

Useful Websites

I am always happy to discuss any worries, concerns or questions that you may have, so please do not hesitate to approach me. Although you can speak to me at the beginning of the day to give me any messgaes you may have, the end of the day offers more time for discussion so please see me once the children have been dismissed.
