Class 1 2017 - 2018

Welcome to Class 1

Teacher: Miss McVeigh

Teaching Assistant: Mrs Steele

Our Learning

This half term we are learning all about Seaside Holidays and how they have changed over time. We will be writing to our Grandparents asking questions about what The Seaside was like when they were little. We are looking forward to a trip to New Brighton to spend a day by the sea.

In English, as part of The Primary Writing Project, we have been imitating 'The Story of Pirate Tom'. We were very excited to find a message in a bottle left in our classroom from one of the pirates in the story. We will be using this story to write our own 'Rags to Riches' stories. We will also be writing a Non-Chronological Report about The Seaside and we will be creating Seaside Poetry using our senses. Our guided reading text is 'The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch'. We have enjoyed creating the setting from this story for our display.

In Maths we will be focusing on place value up to 100. We will be measuring the length of seaside objects and creating a pirate potion in our capacity topic. We will also be learning about fractions, position and direction, and how to tell the time.

Our new The Way, the Truth and the Life topic is 'Miracles'. We have listened to the story of 'The Storm on the Lake' and we have been very thoughtful when thinking about questions we would like to ask about Jesus' Miracles.

PE

The children have PE every Tuesday afternoon. Please ensure that your child has their kit in school and that it is clearly labelled. We will also take part in the Daily Mile every afternoon.

Homework

Homework will be sent home every Thursday and will alternate between Maths and English. This should be brought back into school the following Monday.

Reading books will be changed every Monday and Thursday, however, please ensure that your child has their book in school every day. Please listen to your child read every day and encourage them to retell the story and explain their understanding of what is read.

Every Monday, spelling books will be sent home with words that your child will be learning that week in phonics. Please encourage your child to practice these words and apply them in their writing.

Communication

I am always happy to discuss any worries, concerns or questions that you may have, so please do not hesitate to approach me. Although you can speak to me at the beginning of the day to give me any messgaes you may have, the end of the day offers more time for discussion so please see me once the children have been dismissed.
