Welcome to Reception!

Welcome to our Reception Class page, where we will keep you up to date with the children's learning and share important information, events and photographs with you.  We aim to provide a wonderful learning environment for the children in the Early Years Foundation Stage that is full of nuture, fun and engagement.

Communication

Please tell the team if you have any worries or concerns.  We are always available to talk about your child, their learning, progress and well-being.  We look forward to getting to know you and your child as they begin their first year in school.

Our Topic this half term is 'Pirates and Under the Sea'

This half term we will be learning all about 'Pirates' and learning key facts about them. The children will make treasure maps, wanted posters and jolly rogers as well as pretending to be pirates and taking part in art and craft activities related to 'Pirates and Under the Sea'.  When learning about sea creatures, we will find out information about the different animals that live in the sea. The children will be reading fiction and non-fiction books in relationship to our new topic.  This will extend their writing using our whole school Literacy scheme of 'The Primary Writing Project'.

Our Learning

Our new topic is planned from the children's interest in 'Pirates and Under the Sea'.  Many of our areas in the classroom will be linked to our new topic. Our reading area has will become an 'under water reading cave' where the children can enjoy a variety of fiction and non-fiction books.  We will also have a new fantastic 'Pirate ship' role play area where children can extend their role play, reading, writing and maths.

In Maths the children will continue to cover the Shape, Space and Measure area of learning.  Where possible our learning will link to our new topic.

The children will continue to consolidate their addition and subtraction skills as well as learning how to double, halve and share.  We will also be learning how to count in 2s, 5s and 10s.

The Way, the Truth and the Life

The RE scheme we follow at St Luke's Catholic Primary School is 'The Way, The Truth and The Life, which is taught in every class.  This term we will be learning about 'Gods World', as well as having worship time and prayers embedded  into our daily routine.

PE

Physical Education lessons will now be on a Thursday morning this term. Our new PSHE scheme 'Jigsaw' will be taught on a Wednesday afternoon.  Children have become much more confident when getting changed into their PE kits and getting  changed back into their school uniforms when we return to class after PE. We will be sending PE kits home every half term holiday to be washed.

Reading Books

Reading books will be changed on a Tuesday and a Friday.  Please make sure you are reading with your child at home and make a comment in their reading diary.  If you wish you keep a book a little longer you can keep the book until the next Friday or Tuesday.

Not forgetting to mention....

Please ensure that your child bring a named water bottle into school everyday and if you haven't done so already, please could you provide your child with a pair of wellies to keep in school for the year.  We will be using the field part of our outdoor classroom regularly and want the children to be prepared!

Assessment and Learning Journeys

To document our learning in Reception, we use the online learning journey 'Learning Book'.

You can view your child's learning at any time, on any device, using your email address and password that you were given at the beginning of the year. We can reset this at any time, if needed!  The website address is www.learningbook.co.uk

Not only can you view your child's learning but you can also add in your own images and comments to share what learning has been taking place at home. We love celebrating these moments in school and they demonstrate the progress that your child is making.

Kind regards

Miss Ledsham
