BBC 500 Words
500 Words is the UK’s most successful short story-writing competition for
children between the ages of 5 and 13. Since the competition launched,
over 900,000 stories have been entered in the competition.
It was launched back in 2011, after Chris Evans had a dream. He dreamt
of getting children excited about reading and writing. All children: no
matter what their ability, experience, or background.
It’s very simple. Entrants write an original story on any subject or theme
in 500 Words or fewer and submit it online. If they win, their story will be
read live on the radio by a superstar celebrity!
We are extremely proud to say that 4 of our entries made it through to the
second round of judging - only 5,000 were chosen out of 135,000 entries
this year!
Congratulations to Harry B(Y6), Olivia P-S(Y5) and Freya M(Y3)!
You can read their stories below.
Even bigger congratulations go to Alex R (Y3) who has made it
through to the FINAL of the competiton! Out of 135,000 entries, he is
down to the final 50! Huge congratulations, Alex! His story can be heard
below being read by actress Ell Potter
