Music

Music Curriculum at St Luke's Catholic Primary School

Intent

At St Luke’s Catholic Primary School, we believe that Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. A high-quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of Music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon.

Music is a key part of life at St Luke's, whether it's singing in the choir; piano lessons; woodwind lessons or playing string instruments in Class 5. During their years at St Luke’s, all children will have the opportunity to develop their understanding, skills and techniques in Music in a fun and engaging way.

Implement

At St Luke's, we offer a bespoke Music curriculum that is supported by clear skills and knowledge progression. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children.

Music is an important part of school life at St Luke's and is integrated across the school day as much as possible. Music is often played to support learning and enhance the learning environment. A variety of music genres are explored throughout the year. There are regular opportunities planned into the school year that allow the children to perform and celebrate their musical talents including Christmas Carol Concerts, Nativity plays and the End of Year Key Stage 2 Performance.

Lessons are delivered to the whole class and a class journal is built up to show the progression of skills.

Impact

The children will leave St Luke’s Catholic Primary School with a deeper understanding of Music. They will understand how Music is structured and have developed their skills within the key areas of the Music Curriculum in preparation for Key Stage 3.

Our successful school choir have been part of the wider school community; performing at a number of community events such as Frodsham Festivals, St Luke's Church Carol Concerts to larger scale events such as The Royal Cheshire Show, Young Voices (Manchester Arena) and AmaSing (Storyhouse Theatre, Chester). By being part of larger scale events within the community, the children’s performance skills are enhanced and their confidence shines.

Colossians 3:16 ‘Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly....with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.’
