Spring Learning:
English - Reading
Daily reading is a key priority in primary school and we actively encourage children to read as much as possible at home to help further develop their fluency and comprehension skills. Every child will be able to bring home a banded reading book from school. These will be assigned to children by their class teacher following a short reading assessment. These can be changed regularly in school. Every child is also encouraged to have a 'Reading for Pleasure' book.
Within our Whole Class Reading lessons, we will be exploring a variety of texts within a variety of genres. This will give children plenty of opportunities to practise their reading comprehension skills and learn about new things.
Our class novel for this half term is 'The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe' by C. S. Lewis.
English - Writing
Our focus text for this half term is 'Stone Age Boy' by Satoshi Kitamura. Using our key text, the children will work towards writing an historical narrative. Throughout the unit, children will work towards the Mastery Keys outlined below.
Mastery Keys (Year 3)
Form nouns with a range of prefixes
Use present and past tenses correctly and consistently including progressive and present perfect forms
Use inverted commas to punctuate direct speech (using dialogue to show relationship between characters)
Group related ideas into paragraphs

Maths
In Maths, we follow Power Maths. This allows children to develop their fluency, reasoning and problem solving skills.
During this term, our topics are:
Year 3: Multiplication, Length & Perimeter, Fractions, Mass
Year 4: Multiplication, Length & Perimeter, Fractions, Decimals.
Throughout the week, children are given many opportunities to practise their arithmetic skills. Each morning, all children complete a 'Tough Ten' and on a Friday, all children will participate in an arithmetic lesson.
Science
Our Science topic for this half term is Forces and Magnets. Throughout this unit, children will practise using a variety of scientific skills to help them learn:
A force is a push or a pull.
Objects move at different speeds on different surfaces depending on the amount of friction.
Magnets attract and repel.
Magnets have 2 poles: north and south.
Magnets can attract and repel at a distance.
Materials can be magnetic or non-magnetic.
History
This term, we will be exploring: Roman Britain - How was Britain changed by the Romans? What was the impact on Chester?
This topic is a chance for pupils to explore how life developed after the Iron Age, how the Romans lived, and how they expanded their empire. Pupils will explore a range of sources and research to see how the Romans impacted the local city of Chester.
Geography
This term, we will be exploring: Why do people live near Volcanoes?
Pupils will explore European volcanoes and discover why people choose to settle near to them. They will learn about the structure of volcanoes and tectonic plates, and understand why and how a volcano erupts.
Pupils will use a variety of Geographical skills including map work, to gain a deeper understanding.
Art
This half term, we will be focusing on Painting and Mixed Media.
In Year 3 we will:
Choose the correct paintbrush grip for purpose. E.g. holding the paintbrush with three -finger grip close to the tip to add detail.
Use directional brush strokes following the outline of the shape.
Mix different tones of a base colour.
The application of tone shows a clear contrast between dark, mid and light within a base colour.
Place objects in their relative positions onto the paper.
In Year 4 we will:
Lines and shapes can be applied with increasing accuracy, showing control using appropriate painting medium.
Use directional brushstrokes that can influence a shape's appearance.
Create objects in the foreground that appear larger than those in the background.
Explore texture in an artwork using different techniques such as layering, differing brush strokes or varying equipment such as a sponge or palette knife.
Music
Music sessions will be delivered by Junior Jam. This half term, we will be focusing on 'Singing'.
Computing
Computing sessions will be delivered by Junior Jam.
PE
Our P.E. day for this half term is Thursday. Children should come to school in their kit. All kit must be clearly labelled, and appropriate footwear must be worn. Jewellery, including earrings, must not be worn during P.E. days. School hoodies and jogging bottoms can be purchased online with school uniform.
Personal Development
At St Luke's, RHE is taught using a scheme created by 'Ten:Ten'. Our topic this term is Created to Love Others. Rooted in the teaching that we are created by God who loves them, and will help children to develop a basic understanding of the Sacraments of Baptism and Reconciliation, and how they make the invisible visible.

Our focus text for this half term is 'Counting on Katherine' by Helaine Becker. Using our key text, the children will work towards writing an information piece. Throughout the unit, children will work towards mastery the Mastery Keys outlined below.

Science (Autumn 1)
Our Science topic for this half term is Rocks. Throughout this unit, children will practise using a variety of scientific skills to help them learn:
Rocks can be classified in different ways e.g. by the way they look and their physical properties.
Fossils are formed over thousands of years.
Fossils are found within sedimentary rocks.
Fossils were living things that became trapped in a rock.
Soil is made from rocks and organic matter.
Science (Autumn 2)
Our Science topic for this half term is Animals Including Humans. Throughout this unit, children will practise using a variety of scientific skills to help them learn:
Skeletons are there for movement, support and protection of some organs.
Muscles are connected to the bones.
Muscles help us to move.
A balanced diet is important for humans.
Humans and animals get nutrition from the food they eat.
History
This term, we will be exploring: 'How was life different in the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age?'
This topic is a chance for pupils to explore how life has developed since the start of the Stone Age where humans lived as hunter-gatherers and foraged for food. Pupils will explore the tools used during these key times and understand the technological advancements made across this period. We will look at artefacts from the time and make local links to Frodsham.
Geography
This term, we will be exploring: 'Are all settlements the same?
Pupils will explore villages, towns and cities, understanding how land is used in our local area and deciphering between urban and rural areas.
We will look at a variety of aerial images and maps, identifying Ordnance Survey symbols and exploring how these can help us when learning about the local area.
Design Technology
This half term, we will be focusing on Structures and Pavilions. We will design a pavilion that has a free-standing frame structure able to support their own weight. We will learn about different joining techniques and the importance of selecting appropriate shapes.
Music
Music sessions will be delivered by Junior Jam. This half term, we will be focusing on 'Singing'.
